WSS 2011 Mobile Robotics Gold Medallist

Name : Tan Chia Kai

NYP Course and Year : Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering (Year 3)

Competition Area : Mobile Robotics

1) Why did you decide to join WorldSkills Singapore?

It is because of my interest in programming and robots that my lecturer actually introduced me to such a competition area. I like getting new challenges that are given to me and getting the robot to complete these certain tasks that are given to me makes me happy and my time worthwhile.

2) What has the training for the competition been like?

Training for the competition has been very challenging and stressful. We have program the robot to complete the given task within a limited time and to get the robot to finish the task as fast as possible. We are being trained in the aspects of time management, stress management and critical thinking.

3) What have you learnt so far?

I learnt how to relax and calm myself during stressed situation, managing my time, thinking out of the box, focusing on the task on hand and how to solve problems which are being faced during the last minute. And lastly how to adapt to the situation rather than letting the situation affects to me.

4) Do you encounter any obstacles in your training? How do you overcome these obstacles?

During the training, lots of obstacles have been faced, but with the encouragement and help of my coaches and the will to never give up, we stood by and overcome these obstacles as a team even though it takes up a bit more of our time.

5) What are your aspirations for the finals of the competition? Do you set any targets for yourself?

My aspiration for the finals of the competition is to get to London for the WSC 2011 and get the gold medal. And targets are set to motivate myself more, striving for my goals.

6) What do you hope to learn from this whole experience?

I hope to learn how to make use of what I have learnt from this whole experience in my daily life.

1) Why did you decide to join WorldSkills Singapore?

I want to gain knowledge and experience which cannot be found in my textbook and my entire life. To challenge myself to overcome the problems faced during the competition.

2) What has the training for the competition been like?

The training is very challenging and interesting. We have to let the robot to complete a task within the time given and to get the robot to finish it as fast as possible.

3) What have you learnt so far?

I have learnt how to manage my time, stress management, critical thinking and react to situation fast.

4) Do you encounter any obstacles in your training? How do you overcome these obstacles?

Yes there will be obstacles faced during our training. We overcome it by giving ourselves some time to think of how to solve the problem we are facing and to solve it with multiple of tries.

5) What are your aspirations for the finals of the competition? Do you set any targets for yourself?
My aspiration for the finals of the competition is to get to London for the WSC 2011 and get the gold medal for Singapore. And my target is to do my very best during the competition.

6) What do you hope to learn from this whole experience?

I hope to learn how to make use of what I have learnt from this whole experience in my daily life.
