WSS 2011 CNC Milling Gold Medallist

Name : Lin ZhaoXiong Kenny

NYP Course and Year : Digital and Precision Engineering / 2008

Competition Area : CNC Milling

1) Why did you decide to join World Skills Singapore?

I decided to join World Skills Singapore because I was amazed with what a CNC milling machine can do when I was studying in year one of my diploma. My curiosity for this trade grew since then and so I joined World Skills Singapore to explore and also gain more knowledge about this trade.

2) What has the training for the competition been like?

It's been more than a year since my first training started. I still remember when I first started training, I was so unsure of how to operate the machine and until today I have learnt so much more. The process was hectic as I had to stay back after school whenever my lessons end early and come back to school during my off days. Until today, I feel that the training really paid off as I qualified into the final round of competition.

3) What have u learnt so far?

Till today, I have learnt a lot more about CNC technology and how advanced it is now as compared to the past. During the qualifying round, I have also learnt to focus properly on what I am doing and not get distracted by what is happening by the surrounding. Another important thing that I have learnt is to manage my time well because the time given to complete a task is limited.

4) Do u encounter any obstacles in your training? How do u overcome these obstacles?

I believe that in all trainings, there is bound to be obstacles that we have to overcome. As for myself, I would seek help from my coach and peers to find solutions and overcome the obstacles.

5) What are your aspirations for the finals of the competition? Do u set any target for yourself?

My aspiration for this finals is to be able to get the Gold medal and represent Singapore in the 2011 WSC in London. My target would be London.

6) What do u hope to learn from this whole experience?

I hope that I can learn more than what my diploma teaches me and with these skills, I would be able to do better in my future working environment.
